This art work is attributed to the Spanish artist Xavier Bueno. There is no provenance. The work is signed.

As is typical with Buenos paintings of children , here he depicts a  young girl, on this occasion forward facing with a somewhat forlorn expression. Quite captivating, such that one might want to cradle the individual, 'everything will be alright'

This art work appears to be painted on artist hard board. 

The work is mounted in a frame typical of the 1960s era and appears original to the work, having era specific rear fixings.

Xavier Bueno was a Spanish born artist Xavier Bueno (1915–1979) was a Spanish born painter and key figure in the Pittori Modern della Realta movement in Italy,  known for his shift from post-impressionism to a poignant, socially conscious realism. Alongside his brother Antonio, he worked in Florence, focusing on somber, textured portraits of children, laborers, and melancholic, still-life scenes.

  • Early Life & Education: Born in Vera de Bidasoa, Spain, he showed early talent, studying at the Geneva Fine Arts Academy and in Paris, where he was influenced by Spanish realism.

  • Move to Italy: In 1940, he moved to Florence with his brother, Antonio, where they remained, later working with Gregorio Sciltian and Pietro Annigoni.

  • Artistic Evolution:

    • Themes: Developed a "childhood" cycle (1959–1964) depicting melancholic, suffering, and oppressed subjects.

    • Style: Known for "fresco on canvas" techniques, including using sand and collage to add texture.

  • Death: He passed away in Fiesole, Italy, in 1979.
