This work depicts two boys closely regarding a pool on a beach, perhaps fishing.
The scene is thought to have been painted in Pacific Grove, California as this is an area identified in similar of his works.
This is a sizeable piece being 57 X 46 Cm ,
A large gilt mount is original to the artwork and gives some measure of impact which is helped by a fine frame of similar age, though is not original to the work.
Condition is good overall, minimum colour fade, foxing spots are visible.

J. H. E. Partington (1843-1899)
Born and educated in Manchester, England, Partington was part of the Manchester School of Painters, young vanguard artists who gathered around Joseph Knight in the 1870s. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and founded a life study school in Manchester modeled on the Académie Julian in Paris. For health reasons Partington moved with his wife and children to Oakland, California, in the 1880s. He and his son Richard founded the Partington School of Illustrating in San Francisco in 1891. In California he achieved success as a portrait painter, attracting major commissions in the 1890s.
